NAIROBI, KENYA / RankWire.AI / – The United Nations Environment Programme and Climate and Clean Air Coalition have published a new global assessment indicating that coordinated efforts to combat climate change and reduce air pollution could yield approximately $15 in economic benefits for every dollar spent. Released on September 7, the report analyzes 25 different measures targeting major sources of emissions and pollution, marking the first extensive global economic evaluation of integrated climate and clean air initiatives.

Climate and clean air action delivers $15 for every $1 spent
Clean air and climate action can deliver major health, economic and emissions benefits.

According to the assessment, the annual economic advantages are projected to reach 2.8% of the global GDP by 2035. This proportion is expected to increase to 4.5% by 2050 and 11.4% by 2100 if measures are fully implemented. Even without considering non-market welfare gains, these actions would generate approximately $4 in benefits for each dollar invested. The report further warns that delaying implementation by a year could lead to a loss of more than $1.5 trillion in combined annual benefits.

The 25 proposed measures encompass sectors such as energy, fossil fuel systems, industry, transport, agriculture, residential energy, and waste management. Their scope includes expanding renewable energy, increasing energy efficiency, promoting cleaner cooking and heating technologies, adopting electric vehicles, and tightening vehicle emissions standards. Additional strategies involve reducing oil and gas leaks, preventing routine venting and flaring, optimizing fertilizer use, managing livestock and rice farming practices, and curbing crop residue burning. The package also advocates for improved waste management and efforts to decrease hydrofluorocarbons and other climate pollutants.

Significant economic advantages across key sectors

Air pollution remains a crucial factor in the economic analysis, given its impact on health and productivity. The assessment correlates human-caused outdoor air pollution with roughly 6.4 million premature deaths globally in 2025. Household air pollution is estimated to have caused an additional 2 million premature deaths, including about 300,000 children. Outdoor pollution also contributed to 5.5 million new childhood asthma cases and 2 million new dementia cases during the same year.

Achieving full implementation of these measures could prevent a total of 144 million premature deaths related to air pollution by 2050. This figure includes 96 million deaths associated with ambient air pollution. The assessment also forecasts hundreds of millions fewer cases of chronic diseases. Compared to baseline projections, immediate adoption of these measures could reduce global carbon dioxide emissions by half by 2050, cut methane emissions by 60%, and decrease several major air pollutants by about 70%.

Climate mitigation and health improvements go hand in hand

The proposed package of measures is projected to limit global warming to about 0.34 degrees Celsius by 2050 and 1.4 degrees by 2100. By the end of the century, major air pollutants could decrease by as much as 85% under the assessment scenario. The costs of implementing these strategies are estimated to be around 0.7% of global GDP over the next ten years, declining to about 0.5% by the century’s end. The report also notes that stronger enabling conditions could accelerate full implementation by as much as ten years.

The UN Environment Programme and Climate and Clean Air Coalition unveiled these findings in celebration of the International Day of Clean Air for blue skies. The assessment highlights institutional barriers as key obstacles to wider adoption of existing measures. It suggests that removing these barriers could generate up to $10 trillion in savings by 2040. Overall, the report ties together climate policy, air quality, health costs, and productivity within a single economic framework based on measures already available across critical sectors.
