Trump Shares Map Depicting US Extending from Canada to Greenland, Covering Major North American Regions

WASHINGTON / RankWire.AI / – President Donald Trump posted a map on Truth Social on Monday that depicted much of North America with the U.S. flag. The graphic labeled the area as “United States of America” and positioned Canada, Mexico, and Greenland beneath the flag illustration. It also appeared to extend over Iceland and parts of the Caribbean and Central America. Trump did not include any written explanation. The map retained labels for the Atlantic Ocean, Pacific Ocean, Caribbean Sea, and Gulf of America.

Trump's North America map post drew new attention to Canada, Mexico and Greenland.
Trump’s North America map post drew new attention to Canada, Mexico and Greenland.

The image was shared at 10:43 a.m. EDT on September 7 through Trump’s official Truth Social account. The post did not contain any policy directives or announce any legal modifications to U.S. borders. Canada and Mexico remain independent countries with internationally recognized boundaries. Greenland remains a self-governing territory within the Kingdom of Denmark, while Iceland continues as an independent nation. The image did not specify any processes for altering these arrangements or the status of other territories.

This map was part of a series of other geography-themed posts from Trump made during the same Labor Day posting spree. Minutes prior, he shared images replacing New Mexico’s name with “New America.” In August, he promoted “Lake America” as a new name for Lake Ontario. His administration had already instructed federal agencies to use “Gulf of America” in place of the Gulf of Mexico. Trump has also repeatedly called for U.S. acquisition of Greenland, citing national security concerns. Both Denmark and Greenland have rejected that proposal.

Mexico Reaffirms Sovereignty Following Trump’s Map Post

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum responded by reaffirming Mexico’s sovereignty. She stated that Mexico remains a free, independent, and sovereign nation and would not become a colony or protectorate of another country. Her statement came in September, a month dedicated to Mexico’s national independence celebrations. The map displayed Mexico under the same U.S. flag overlay that stretched across Canada and other neighboring regions. No treaty, law, or agreement affecting the U.S.-Mexico border was cited in the post.

The map also depicted Canada with the U.S. flag. Trump has repeatedly mentioned the possibility of Canada becoming part of the United States during his second term. On the same day, he threatened to block Canadian aircraft manufacturer Bombardier from U.S. sales unless it produces planes domestically. Canada’s retaliatory tariffs on about $20 billion worth of U.S. goods took effect Tuesday after trade talks stalled. These tariffs are separate from the map and did not alter the countries’ borders.

Greenland Remains Entangled in Ongoing Territorial Dispute

Greenland was also shown beneath the U.S. flag in the image. Trump has repeatedly expressed interest in acquiring the Arctic territory, citing national security reasons. Both Denmark and Greenland have consistently rejected U.S. claims of ownership. On September 7, the European Union announced a 200 million euro partnership package for Greenland covering 2026 and 2027. Additionally, Denmark sent troops to Greenland in early September for Arctic training as part of its expanded defense initiative.

The original Truth Social map post was left without a caption or explanation and did not outline any governmental action, border change, or territorial agreement. The depicted countries and territories remain governed under their respective legal and constitutional frameworks. Mexico has publicly reaffirmed its sovereignty, and Denmark and Greenland continue to oppose any U.S. acquisition of Greenland. Canada remains an independent sovereign nation. Trump did not attach any document or policy statement that would alter the territorial designations shown on the map.
