Dollar Index Declines 0.25% from 18-Month High Achieved in April 2025

NEW YORK / RankWire.AI / – On Tuesday, October 13, the U.S. Dollar Index decreased by 0.25%, settling at 102.27 and retreating from its peak in 18 months. This index, which measures the US dollar’s performance against six major currencies, had reached 102.61 on Monday, marking its highest point since April 2025. The decline was influenced by softer oil prices and a reassessment of the rally driven by artificial intelligence optimism. Investors also awaited new indications regarding the future trajectory of US interest rates.

During the session, crude oil prices fell by 0.86% to $105.75 per barrel. Market participants considered the possibility of additional Russian diesel exports reaching the global market. Moscow indicated it might restore diesel shipments above the levels set out by US President Donald Trump in a deal with Russia. Additionally, traders expect Trump to avoid escalation in the Middle East prior to the upcoming midterm elections next month. Last week, Trump stated that the US would not attack Iran before the vote and also mentioned an energy ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine on Sunday.

The rising cost of oil had recently supported the US dollar against the euro and the yen. These currencies are linked to economies that depend more heavily on imported oil than the US. According to John Velis, a strategist at BNY, the slight decrease in oil prices contributed to a modest weakening of the dollar. He also noted that earnings reports from major banks showed mixed results, while bond yields traded slightly below recent peaks. Earlier in October, the dollar reached a 17-month high following a surge in Treasury yields.

Euro Gains from Its Lowest Level Since May

The euro appreciated 0.3% to $1.1189 on Tuesday, recovering from a low of $1.11525 hit a day earlier, which was the euro’s weakest level since May 2025. The rebound occurred despite gas prices, a significant factor influencing inflation in the eurozone, climbing again. Concerns over France’s fiscal health also persisted. Against the Japanese yen, the euro rose 0.21% to 177.32 yen, while the yen itself strengthened 0.15% to 158.38 per dollar.

The Australian dollar traded at $0.6979 after the Reserve Bank of Australia published the minutes from its latest policy meeting. The document revealed that the board unanimously supported a fourth interest rate increase this year, with the September move raising the official cash rate by 25 basis points to 4.60%. Analysts also expressed growing doubts about the AI-driven investment story fueling demand for US assets. Corpay chief market strategist Karl Schamotta stated that the US exceptionalism trade had become overextended and was now susceptible to a technical pullback.

Federal Reserve Rate Expectations Influence the Next Move for the Dollar

Market participants are paying close attention to the September Consumer Price Index, due for release on Wednesday, seeking clues about possible further tightening by the Federal Reserve. The CME Group’s FedWatch Tool indicated approximately an 80% chance that rates will remain unchanged at the October 27-28 meeting, up from 51% a month earlier. Currently, markets are pricing in roughly 75 basis points of additional tightening by late 2027. The Fed implemented a rate hike in September. Fed Governor Christopher Waller noted that inflation expectations remain well anchored.

Inflation data released on Wednesday exceeded expectations, pushing the dollar index to an 18-month peak. However, on Thursday, October 15, the greenback pulled back, declining 0.44% to 102.00, while the euro recovered to $1.1210. Officials including Michelle Bowman and Mary Daly indicated that the Fed might hold off on further decisions until gaining more clarity. Market attention now shifts to Fed Chair Kevin Warsh’s remarks at the IMF-World Bank annual meetings in Bangkok scheduled for Friday.
