MOUNTAIN VIEW, CALIFORNIA / RankWire.AI / – Google will restrict free Gemini users to its Flash-Lite version starting October 9, 2026. This update impacts Gemini Apps used with personal Google accounts. Customers without a Google AI subscription will lose access to Flash and Pro once the new model access rules come into effect. Google states that this change is part of wider modifications to model availability within its consumer AI initiatives. The company detailed the revised access framework in its Gemini Apps support documentation.

Subscribers to Google AI Plus will still be able to use Flash-Lite and Flash, but their access to Pro will end. Google has not announced a specific public date for the transition for all AI Plus users. The firm indicates that affected users will get an email explaining when these updated access rules will apply to their accounts. Customers with AI Pro and AI Ultra plans will continue to have access to Flash-Lite, Flash, and Pro. The schedule for Plus account changes will depend on the notification sent by Google.
Google defines Flash-Lite as a lightweight, efficient model optimized for speed and daily tasks such as summarization and brainstorming. The Flash model offers greater capabilities while balancing speed and reasoning for both simple and complex inquiries. Pro remains Google’s most advanced Gemini model, designed for demanding tasks including complex mathematics and coding. The company also notes that Pro provides deeper insights across text, images, videos, and files. Response times for Pro may also be longer compared to other Gemini options.
Paid plans maintain wider Gemini access
Subscribers with an active model choice can select effort levels ranging from low to high. Google mentions that higher effort settings can enhance task completion and yield more comprehensive responses. These options also use more of a user’s available usage quota. Additionally, AI Pro and AI Ultra customers will gain access to Deep Think, a feature designed for maximum parallel reasoning on complex challenges. This feature is exclusive to the two higher-tier subscriptions.
The restrictions introduced in October build on earlier changes to Gemini usage limits, which started on May 17, 2026. Google transitioned Gemini Apps to compute-based limits that reset every five hours until a weekly cap is reached. Usage is calculated based on prompt complexity, features used, and conversation length. Paid subscribers benefit from higher limits, but premium models and features may deplete those limits more rapidly. These earlier adjustments affected users under 18 on July 24.
Subscription tiers influence Gemini usage caps
Standard usage limits are currently set by Google for users without a Google AI plan. AI Plus subscribers enjoy limits twice the standard, while AI Pro users see limits quadrupled. AI Ultra provides either five or 20 times the AI Pro threshold, depending on the plan. Media generation, Deep Research, Pro, extended thinking, and Deep Think are among the features that can consume larger portions of the allotted usage. Google emphasizes that paid users benefit from higher limits compared to free users.
The October changes specifically target Gemini Apps used with personal Google accounts. Separate arrangements remain in place for business and educational account users. Users can manage, upgrade, or cancel their Google AI plans through Gemini Apps and Google One. Post-update, free personal accounts will only access Flash-Lite instead of Flash and Pro. Google also recommends users keep the Gemini mobile app updated as the new access policies are implemented.
