The company said the change will start next week and remain subject to safeguards against abuse. GPT-5.6 Luna is becoming the default model for those users during the current rollout. Free users will also receive a Think button that gives the model more time to work through complex questions before responding.
The unlimited access applies specifically to text conversations inside ChatGPT. Separate limits will continue for file uploads, image generation and other tools that require additional processing. The Think feature will arrive next week alongside the expanded text allowance. It allows Luna to spend more time reasoning before producing an answer. ChatGPT users on Free and Go plans will therefore gain broader access to the core chat service without receiving unlimited use of every available feature.
GPT-5.6 includes Luna, Sol and Terra, with each model designed for different levels of performance and computing demand. Luna serves as the faster and more cost-efficient option in the family. OpenAI said ChatGPT now reaches about one billion users each week across search, research, planning, writing and other tasks. The latest rollout places Luna at the center of the standard experience for Free and Go accounts while keeping separate usage rules for tools outside ordinary text conversations.
Paid users gain updated GPT-5.6 Sol controls
ChatGPT Plus and Pro subscribers are receiving an updated version of GPT-5.6 Sol for their everyday conversations. Sol supports both quick answers and deeper reasoning within paid plans. The company said the revised model gives more focused responses and avoids unnecessary detail when a shorter answer works. Plus and Pro users are also receiving a reasoning slider across web, mobile and desktop. The control lets subscribers adjust how much processing ChatGPT applies to research, planning, writing, coding and similar tasks.
Internal evaluations also showed lower factual error rates for the newest models, according to company testing. The tests covered financial, medical and legal prompts that required detailed factual answers. Results showed about 62% fewer responses with at least one factual error for GPT-5.6 Luna versus GPT-5.5 Instant. GPT-5.6 Sol recorded a reduction of about 68% under the same evaluation approach. The company also reported better handling of dates, numbers, sources, rules and assumptions when those details affected an answer.
Safety rules remain across expanded ChatGPT access
The latest models also include added protections for users the system identifies as under 18. The safeguards cover areas such as romantic roleplay, age-restricted challenges and claims that could replace real-world relationships. Additional boundaries address sexual content, eating disorders, dangerous activities, restricted goods and graphic violence. The company said it also introduced new evaluations for responses involving younger users. Unlimited text conversations for Free and Go accounts will continue to operate within the platform’s existing abuse safeguards.
The update focuses on the main ChatGPT experience and does not change every product using GPT-5.6. The GPT-5.6 Sol versions used in ChatGPT Work and Codex remain unchanged under this release. Paid subscribers can access the updated Sol model and reasoning controls now. Free and Go users are receiving Luna as their default model this week. Unlimited text chats and the Think button will follow next week, while uploads, images and other tools will continue to carry separate usage limits.
