Three-Month Lows for the US Dollar as Treasury Yields Decline to Supportive Levels

WASHINGTON, D.C. / RankWire.AI / – On Thursday, the U.S. dollar hovered near a three-month low, driven by a retreat in long-term Treasury yields. The dollar index was recorded at 98.813 against a basket of six major currencies, positioning it close to its lowest point since mid-May. Meanwhile, the euro appreciated to $1.1676, reaching its highest level since late May. Currency traders also examined new U.S. Treasury initiatives and the minutes from the Federal Reserve’s latest policy meeting.

US dollar stays near three-month low as Treasury yields fall
US dollar trading remains in focus as Treasury yields ease and major currencies gain.

The Treasury Department revealed on Wednesday that it will increase liquidity support through buybacks of longer-dated government bonds, with the maximum size of these operations at least doubling from $2 billion to $4 billion. The scope now includes nominal coupon securities in the 10-year to 20-year and 20-year to 30-year categories. These enhanced buybacks are set to commence on September 9 and will run through November 4, covering the current quarterly refunding period.

Following the Treasury announcement, yields on long-term U.S. government bonds declined. The 30-year Treasury yield was approximately 5.184% on Thursday, after experiencing a sharp drop during the previous trading session. Earlier this week, the yield peaked at 5.337%, marking its highest level since 2007. Fluctuations in Treasury yields impact borrowing costs across markets and can influence the dollar’s demand. The Treasury Department also indicated that an updated tentative schedule for buyback operations will be issued later.

    Declining dollar bolsters major currencies

The recent weakening of the dollar supported several key currencies in Asian markets. The Japanese yen strengthened to roughly 158.45 per dollar after nearing the closely watched 160 level. The British pound traded near $1.3604, approaching a three-month high. The Swiss franc was near 0.7999 per dollar. Meanwhile, the euro remained above $1.16 as the dollar index stayed below 99. This broader dollar decline followed a decrease in the U.S. currency during the previous session.

Minutes from the Federal Reserve’s July 28-29 meeting, released Wednesday, expressed ongoing concern about inflation. The Federal Open Market Committee decided to hold the benchmark federal funds rate within the range of 3.5% to 3.75%, with nine members supporting no change and three favoring a quarter-point increase. Officials highlighted that inflation remains elevated relative to the Fed’s 2% target, despite the U.S. economy continuing its solid expansion.

Inflation remains a key focus in Fed minutes

The minutes revealed that several policymakers were inclined to raise interest rates in July, with many indicating that higher borrowing costs could be necessary if inflation did not trend toward the 2% goal. The Federal Reserve maintained its policy of ample reserves in the banking system and continued rolling over principal payments from Treasury holdings at auction. The central bank’s next scheduled meeting will take place on September 15 and 16.

Thursday’s trading in the dollar reflected the combined effects of falling long-term Treasury yields and the latest signals from U.S. monetary policy. The dollar index remained close to its lowest level in nearly three months, while the 30-year yield stayed below the 19-year high reached earlier this week. The Treasury’s expanded buyback operations will start next month, and the Federal Reserve has kept its policy rate steady. These confirmed developments continue to be central drivers of current trading patterns in the U.S. dollar and government bond markets.
