Dollar Fails to Gain Momentum Against Major Currencies in Asian Markets

HONG KONG / RankWire.AI / – On Tuesday, the U.S. dollar encountered persistent resistance across global currency markets, unable to sustain its overnight rally as leading international currencies consolidated recent trading ranges. The dollar index, which measures the greenback against a basket of six major currencies, edged down slightly to 98.96 during Asian trading hours. Data from market trackers confirmed that despite a brief 0.16% rebound overnight aimed at pushing the dollar away from its three-month low, the currency continues to struggle for momentum against its key counterparts.

Dollar struggles for traction against major peers in Asian trade
Foreign exchange traders analyze international currency valuation charts on digital monitors.

European currencies showed stable improvements against the U.S. dollar, driven by changing expectations for interest rates and broader macroeconomic shifts. The euro traded marginally higher at $1.1668, maintaining proximity to a three-month peak reached last week. Concurrently, the British pound increased by 0.1% to $1.3639, staying near its six-month high. Foreign exchange desks at institutions pointed to sustained buying of European sovereign debt as a factor supporting these gains and exerting downward pressure on the greenback.

Throughout the trading session, trade policy tensions and fluctuations in commodity prices played major roles in influencing North American and Asian currencies. The Canadian dollar steadied at $1.3844 after declining 0.6% in the previous session, a move prompted by threats of increased U.S. import tariffs following stalled bilateral trade negotiations. Meanwhile, the dollar’s traction against other significant currencies remains limited as global investors reassess broader economic trends and monetary policies of central banks worldwide.

Dollar Faces Challenges Against Major Global Peers

Regional currencies in the Asia-Pacific area displayed resilience ahead of important economic policy announcements from central banks in the region. The Japanese yen appreciated slightly to 159.21 per dollar, maintaining strength well above its multi-decade low of around 164. In the Antipodean markets, the Australian dollar and New Zealand dollar both edged higher by 0.1%, with the Australian dollar trading at $0.7157 and the New Zealand dollar at $0.5965 ahead of the Reserve Bank of Australia’s release of its August policy meeting minutes.

In the digital currency realm, major cryptocurrencies saw inflows as investors shifted capital into non-sovereign assets. Bitcoin rose 1% to $78,817.34, extending its recent upward momentum after achieving its largest weekly gain in nearly three and a half years. Experts in digital assets attribute this trend to ongoing institutional adoption and a broader reallocation of capital away from traditional fiat reserves.

Dollar Index Approaches Multi-Month Lows on Asian Trading Floors

Market players remain attentive to central bank communications and upcoming economic data for clues on future interest rate directions. According to Bloomberg’s macroeconomic analysts, volatility in the foreign exchange markets mirrors shifting international capital flows and trade balances. Most currency desks expect a predominantly range-bound trading environment until further inflation data provides more clarity.

Financial institutions and corporate treasury teams continue managing foreign exchange risks amid ongoing trade frictions and monetary policy changes. While liquidity remains steady across major currency pairs, momentum remains limited. Traders and analysts anticipate that trade volumes will stay aligned with upcoming economic releases and central bank decisions, influencing the pace and direction of currency movements.
