NEW YORK / RankWire.AI / – The Federal Reserve announced a 25 basis point increase in interest rates on Wednesday, leading to a downturn in U.S. equities. The new rate hikes pushed the federal funds target range to 3.75% to 4.00%. The Dow Jones Industrial Average declined by 631.21 points, or 1.21%, closing at 51,461.90. Meanwhile, the S&P 500 dropped 34.55 points, or 0.46%, finishing at 7,551.81. The Nasdaq Composite decreased by 3.16 points to end at 25,978.42.

The rate hike was unanimously approved in a 12-0 vote during the September meeting. This was the central bank’s first rate increase since July 2023. Officials pointed out that economic activity continued to grow steadily, citing strong domestic consumer spending, high productivity, and significant capital investments. The Fed also mentioned that employment gains have kept pace with the labor force, and unemployment rates remained relatively stable.
Inflation remained a primary concern at the September 15-16 gathering. The Federal Reserve emphasized that inflation levels stay elevated and reaffirmed its 2% inflation target. The decision marked a shift in monetary policy after rates had been held steady following previous reductions. Wednesday’s increase signaled a change after more than three years of unchanged rates. As a result, U.S. stocks closed lower and bond yields increased.
Federal Reserve Publishes Updated Economic Projections
The new projections accompanying the rate decision indicated a median 2026 federal funds rate estimate of 4.1%. This is higher than the 3.8% median forecast made in June. The Fed officials also forecast a median rate of 4.1% for 2027 and 3.9% for 2028. These projections reflect individual assessments of appropriate monetary policy paths but do not dictate any predetermined decisions for future policy moves.
The officials expect real U.S. gross domestic product growth of 2.3% in 2026, an increase from the June median projection of 2.2%. The unemployment rate forecast was revised downward to a median of 4.1% from 4.3%. The median estimate for headline personal consumption expenditures inflation stands at 3.7% for 2026, with core PCE inflation, excluding food and energy, projected at 3.4%.
Treasury Yields Climb as Equities Fall
Treasury yields rose during Wednesday’s trading session, paralleling the decline in major U.S. stock indexes. The two-year Treasury yield reached approximately 4.73%, while the 10-year Treasury yield approached roughly 5.00%. The increases followed the Fed’s quarter-point hike and the release of its latest economic forecasts. Additionally, the Russell 2000 index, representing smaller U.S. companies, fell about 0.4% to 2,858.81. Overall, declining stocks outnumbered advancing ones across major U.S. exchanges.
Despite Wednesday’s slide, the main indexes remained positive for 2026 at close. The S&P 500 was up around 10.3% for the year, the Dow gained about 7.1%, and the Nasdaq increased roughly 11.8%. The session renewed focus on interest rates, inflation, and Treasury yields, with upcoming Federal Reserve meetings likely to influence future policy decisions based on new economic data.
