Magnitude 5.0 Seismic Event Occurs Near Atka in Alaska on Saturday Evening

ATKA, ALASKA / RankWire.AI / – The Alaska Earthquake Center reported a magnitude 5.0 earthquake that struck close to Alaska’s Aleutian Islands on Saturday night, with its epicenter located southeast of Atka. The seismic event was recorded at 7:36 p.m. Alaska Daylight Time on August 8, which corresponds to 03:36 UTC on August 9. The quake’s epicenter was approximately 48 miles, or 77 kilometers, southeast of Atka. Its depth was measured at roughly 17 kilometers, or 10.6 miles, according to scientists.

Alaska earthquake reaches magnitude 5.0 near Atka
Seismic networks recorded the magnitude 5.0 earthquake near Atka, Alaska.

The event’s coordinates are 51.8286 degrees north and 173.2496 degrees west. Atka is situated on Atka Island within the Aleutian chain, far from Alaska’s major population centers. The quake also took place southwest of Seguam Island and Amukta Pass, with Mount Sergief and several other islands lying within the broader vicinity. This location places the seismic activity inside one of Alaska’s most seismically active zones, where tremors are common at various depths.

Compared to many deeper earthquakes that develop beneath the Aleutians, the magnitude 5.0 event was relatively shallow. Seismic activity here is driven by the interaction of significant tectonic plates beneath the North Pacific, notably where the Pacific Plate is subducting beneath the North American Plate along the Aleutian Arc. This process results in frequent earthquakes from the western Aleutian Islands extending toward mainland Alaska. The region is under constant monitoring due to its ongoing seismic activity.

Aleutian Arc is a Hotspot for Frequent Earthquakes

The Aleutian Arc stretches across a large portion of the North Pacific and represents a major boundary between tectonic plates. The downward movement of one plate beneath another, known as subduction, generates earthquakes at shallow, intermediate, and deep levels. Alaska witnesses thousands of tremors annually, many originating beneath or near the Aleutian Islands. The U.S. Geological Survey maintains seismic monitoring stations that detect ground movements and assist experts in pinpointing the location, depth, and magnitude of earthquakes.

This region also has a history of powerful earthquakes. In 1957, a magnitude 8.6 quake struck the Andreanof Islands, and a magnitude 8.7 event occurred in the Rat Islands in 1965. Additionally, significant earthquakes took place around the Andreanof Islands in 1986 and 1996. These events, although different in size and location from Saturday’s magnitude 5.0 quake, are part of the broader seismic activity associated with the tectonic boundary beneath the Aleutian chain.

Seismic Monitoring Networks Keep Watch on Alaska’s Quakes

Earthquakes in the Aleutians can originate from various parts of the tectonic system. Some occur near the primary plate boundary, while others are within the descending Pacific Plate, and shallow quakes can also develop within the crust above the boundary. The U.S. Geological Survey maintains national seismic records and evaluates earthquake data across Alaska and the entire country. Local monitoring networks further enhance this effort by providing detailed observations from stations located throughout the state’s remote and expansive terrain.

The magnitude 5.0 earthquake recorded on Saturday adds to the ongoing seismic history of the Aleutian Islands. Its southeast position relative to Atka and its 17-kilometer depth highlight the event’s key features. Seismic stations captured the ground motion signals, enabling specialists to refine the details of the event. Alaska’s large geographic scope and active tectonic boundaries underscore the importance of continuous earthquake surveillance, especially for remote island communities scattered across the Aleutian chain.
