Level 2 Travel Advisory Maintained by US for Belgium as of July 23 Update

BRUSSELS, BELGIUM / RankWire.AI / – The U.S. State Department has revised its travel guidance for Belgium, citing concerns related to crime, terrorism, and civil unrest. The notice issued on July 23 continues to categorize Belgium at Level 2, indicating travelers should exercise increased caution. While crime and unrest have been added to the list of risks, the overall advisory level remains unchanged. This guidance applies to Americans traveling to Brussels, other Belgian cities, and popular tourist destinations nationwide.

US keeps Belgium at Level 2 in updated travel advisory
Belgium travelers should stay alert in tourist areas and transport hubs.

The updated alert emphasizes a heightened risk of theft in busy areas and within transport systems. Pickpocketing incidents frequently occur near railway stations, metro stops, restaurants, airports, and heavily trafficked tourist zones. Travelers may also encounter purse snatching, stolen mobile devices, and theft from parked cars. The advisory recommends safeguarding passports, cash, and electronics when navigating public spaces and advises against leaving luggage or valuables unattended.

Special attention is given to train travel since thieves often target bags stored above seats or near carriage exits. Authorities highlight reports of theft on routes connecting Brussels and Amsterdam. Criminal groups may operate in teams, using distractions to steal wallets, phones, or small luggage items. Belgian Federal Police advise keeping valuables close and maintaining vigilance during station stops. Visitors are urged to stay alert when boarding, disembarking, or moving through crowded terminals.

Transport centers and tourist hotspots under increased scrutiny

The section on terrorism highlights public gatherings, hotels, eateries, shopping districts, and places of worship as locations warranting caution. Schools, parks, transport infrastructure, and significant events are also covered in the updated guidance. Belgium’s national threat level remains at Level 3 on a four-tier scale. Officials characterize this rating as serious, indicating that threats are considered both possible and likely. Visitors are advised to heed security instructions and stay vigilant of their surroundings.

Protests and strikes can disrupt movement within Belgian urban areas, potentially blocking roads, causing train delays, or affecting local transit services. Authorities may restrict access around protest sites and reroute traffic without prior notice. The advisory urges travelers to steer clear of demonstrations and to stay informed through local updates before embarking on journeys. It is recommended to check rail, bus, and metro statuses when large-scale events or labor actions are taking place.

Emergency contacts and careful trip preparation remain crucial

The guidance suggests registering with the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program prior to or during travel. STEP provides security alerts and facilitates communication between the U.S. Embassy in Brussels and American citizens during emergencies. Travelers should also familiarize themselves with entry requirements, local laws, and health advisories before departure. Making copies of passports and travel documents can help expedite assistance in case of loss or theft. It is also advisable for family members or trusted contacts to receive a copy of the itinerary.

Belgium’s emergency services can be reached via 112 for police, fire, and medical emergencies, while the local police number is 101. Tourists are advised to remain cautious around ticket machines, banks, and ATMs, especially in crowded locations. The updated Belgium travel advisory does not recommend avoiding the country but encourages careful preparation, belongings protection, and adherence to official guidance. The Level 2 warning remains in effect as the summer travel season progresses.
